Our Youth Group deliver the goods
On Saturday 17th May, Bolton Little Theatre was buzzing with excitement.
.Elizabeth Tatman had organised a Shakespeare Festival along the linesof the one run by The Rotary Club of Colombo North in Sri Lanka for the last 17 years!
Three groups were represented; St. Augustines of Canterbury Catholic High School, Heywood Arts (in conjunction with Ambitions) and our own Youth Group. They were asked to present a n excerpt from Shakespeare providing their own props and costumes.
Stacey Calladine and June Grice had been putting the Youth Group through their paces and the quality showed. Presenting an excerpt from 'Much Ado about Nothing' Bryn Lunt and Becky Francis took on the roles of the would-be lovers Beatrice and Benedick while Chris Simpson and Sara Collinson set the trap with the help of Sarah Dickson and Juliet Haryley. They had clearly been working hard on diction, clarity and understanding of the text and we were extremely proud of them all. Particular praise must go to Sara Collinson in winning the 'Best Actress Award', it was well deserved. If this is the qulaity of our Youth then the future of the theatre is secure.
Elizabeth Tatman for the Rotary Club of Bolton (Daybreak)in summing up was delighted with the outcome and encouraged the young people to 'Go away and prepare for next year!'.
Our own Chaiman John Towers saidthat he was extremely pleased with the way the contest had gone. 'This is the sort of thing we want to see at the theatre, bringing in new peopleand enthusiasm.'
Actors Workshop
The Actors Workshop has restarted for the 2007-8 season and will take place every Thursday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 except when there is a production running.
Actors and would-be actors are all invited to take part in the workshops, which will be run by individual directors from BLT’s finest. There will also be occasional workshops led by outside experts, which may have to take place on a different day of the week, depending on the leader’s schedule. Watch the theatre notice-board for up-to-date info.
Last season’s crop from the workshop group has already been harvested for a Workshop production on 12/13 October (see below), while five have appeared in The Darling Buds Of May and The School For Scandal. The latter saw group members Sam Cooper, Kelly Weaver, Keith Hayles and Allan Archer give a great account of themselves and cement the Workshop’s place in the theatre as a provider of new talent.
In addition, Allan and Sam have also found roles in Barry Hall’s production of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest next May.
The current workshop group will be staging a production entitled Tennessee Quartet on 12/13 October 2007 consisting of four short Tennessee Williams plays probably never before seen in the UK.
Further details about next season’s workshops will appear in the next Prompter. To join the group, email the Workshop Co-ordinator, Robin Wiseman, on rr.wiseman@ntlworld.com or ring 01204 690858.
